Class Guidelines

Every student wants to know what is expected of him or her in a college course.  Hopefully this page will answer all of your questions.  If no, please feel free to email me.

These policies have been created to facilitate your success in this class

1. Good class attendance is essential in order to earn a passing grade in this class.  I will be taking roll every day.  Persistent absences without student notification may result in being dropped from the class.   If you are absent, it will be your responsibility to get all missed materials from a classmate or you can make an appointment with me to collect handouts and assignments.   If you arrive late, please do not disturb the class.  Take a seat as quickly and quietly as possible.  If you are consistently late, you will be required to meet with the instructor to discuss a plan to remedy this issue.  The same policy will be applied to early exits.

2. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.  Assignments are due on the due date scheduled.  In compelling cases, I will accept an emailed version posted before the due date.

3. In accordance with the atmosphere of free inquiry and exploration of various controversial issues, disrespect for others’ opinions, feelings, or standards will not be tolerated.  As your instructor, I reserve the right to enforce this “safe arena” policy by issuing one verbal warning.  If you continue, then your will be asked to leave the classroom.  As one student put it “Just remember the Golden Rule.”  Additionally, everyone has the right to say "I feel you are being rude," including the instructor, at which time, the speaker will re-evaluate his or her statement and recast his or her language.  Generally, the speaker should offer an apology.  If needed, a confidential instructor/student meeting may be arranged.

4. Writing Clinics:  Prior to each major essay due date, we will participate in  Writing Clinics.  Think of a writing clinic as you would a soccer clinic.  These class sessions are designed to help you learn the craft of writing.  You will be using your own writing as a text for learning. Come to class with a typed, completed essay, not a “rough draft.”  Do not bring your laptop in lieu of a hardcopy.  Your Writing Clinic draft will be included with your final draft along with clinic handouts.  If you do not have a complete draft for Writing Clinic, you will have one point deducted from your class professionalism grade.

5. Students with disabilities, whether physical, learning, or psychological, who believe that they may need accommodations in this class, are encouraged to contact Disabled Students Programs & Services as soon as possible to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely manner.  The phone number for that office is 795-6658 and it is located in Building 3000-Student Services, Room 3009, adjacent to Parking Lot 3C.

6. The instructor has zero tolerance for plagiarism. If the instructor determines that any of your writing has been plagiarized (which is defined as the “willful earn an F on the assignment. When in doubt, don’t do it!

7. The best way to contact the instructor outside of the classroom is to e-mail me at jderoche@miracosta.edu.  Please write “English Student” in the subject line. Generally, during the regular semester session, you can expect a 24-hour response time for all inquires; however, I am unable to respond from Friday at 5 p.m. until Monday at 9 a.m.

8. Office hours are 9:15-10:15 on Monday in the Cafeteria, or by appointment if that time doesn't work.  Call  (760) 757-2121, ext. 6253, to schedule an appointment.

9. As a class, we will decide our policy of cell phone usage.

10. The California Education Code states that no one may interfere with the students' learning process.  If you behave in any manner that distracts fellow students from learning, you will be asked to leave class.

11. Information for veterans.

Stop Before You Drop!

If you begin to feel overwhelmed by this class, get behind, confused, or discouraged, please come talk to me.  I will do all that I can to assist you in successfully completing this course.   If you feel uncomfortable visiting face-to-face, please send an e-mail.  I know that issues come up when you are attending college—your car breaks down, your job hours increase or decrease, children get sick.  These are issues that we can work on together.   Or, perhaps, you just need further clarification of class materials or assignments.  Please be assured that all conversations will be confidential.
